Method
- 1
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish using a small brush of the melted unsalted butter.
- 2
In a large bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until evenly combined.
- 3
Fold the diced Gala apples and chopped raw walnuts into the dry oat mixture, reserving two tablespoons of the apple-walnut mixture for the topping.
- 4
In a medium bowl, whisk together the whole milk, beaten eggs, maple syrup, and the remaining melted unsalted butter until smooth.
- 5
Transfer the oat and apple mixture into the greased baking dish, spreading it in an even layer.
- 6
Pour the milk and egg mixture evenly over the oats, gently pressing the surface with a spoon so all the rolled oats are submerged in liquid, then scatter the reserved apple and walnut pieces over top.
- 7
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 28 to 30 minutes until the center is set, the liquid is fully absorbed, and the top is lightly golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before slicing into 6 portions.
Store cooled baked oatmeal in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, and reheat individual squares in a toaster oven or skillet with a splash of milk.
