Japanese Sesame Garlic Rice
Fragrant jasmine rice tossed in warm garlic-ginger butter and savory coconut aminos, finished with crispy crushed nori flakes.
This comforting Japanese-inspired side comes together effortlessly on busy weeknights. Steamed jasmine rice is enriched with gentle garlic-ginger butter and savory coconut aminos, then finished with delicate crumbles of crispy nori for depth and aroma. It pairs naturally with grilled mushrooms, roasted tofu, or fresh steamed greens.

Method
- 1
In a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, combine the rinsed white jasmine rice, water, and salt over high heat and bring to a rolling boil, about 3 minutes.
- 2
Once boiling, cover the saucepan tightly, turn the heat down to low, and cook for 12 minutes until all liquid is absorbed.
- 3
Remove the pot from the heat and allow the rice to sit covered and steam undisturbed for 3 minutes.
- 4
While the rice rests, melt the butter in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and ground ginger, cooking gently until fragrant and softened without browning, about 2 minutes.
- 5
Stir the coconut aminos into the melted butter mixture and immediately remove the pan from heat.
- 6
Uncover the saucepan and fluff the cooked rice with a fork. Drizzle the warm garlic-ginger butter over the grains, fold in half of the crushed sushi nori, and toss gently until glossy.
- 7
Transfer the rice to a serving bowl, scatter the remaining sushi nori over the top, and serve warm.
For the crispest texture, crumble the nori sheets right before scattering over the warm rice. Leftovers keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat nicely in a warm skillet.
