Method
- 1
In a small ramekin, stir together the chili powder, garlic powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, and salt until evenly combined.
- 2
Heat 2 tablespoons of the avocado oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Drop in 3 yellow popcorn kernels and cover the pot with a lid.
- 3
Wait 2 to 3 minutes until the test kernels pop, signaling the oil is properly heated.
- 4
Uncover and pour in the remaining yellow popcorn kernels, swirling the pot so they form a single layer coated in oil. Cover the pot tightly with the lid slightly ajar to let steam escape.
- 5
Cook over medium heat, shaking the pot across the burner every 10 to 15 seconds. In about 2 to 3 minutes, rapid popping will begin.
- 6
Once the popping slows to 2 to 3 seconds between pops, after roughly 3 to 4 minutes total popping time, remove the pot immediately from the heat.
- 7
Drizzle the popped corn with the remaining 1 tablespoon of avocado oil, sprinkle the spice blend evenly over top, and toss vigorously with a large spoon or shake the covered pot to coat every kernel.
- 8
Pour into a wide serving bowl and enjoy warm.
For the crispiest texture, leave the pot lid cracked slightly while popping so trapped moisture can escape. Store any cooled leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.
